“There was once a widow who had two daughters, one named Rose and the other Blanche.
Blanche was good and beautiful and gentle, but the mother cared nothing for her and gave her only hard words and harder blows; but she loved Rose as she loved the apple of her eye, because Rose was exactly like herself, coarse-looking, and with a bad temper and a sharp tongue.
Blanche was obliged to work all day, but Rose sat in a chair with folded hands as though she were a fine lady, with nothing in the world to do. “

I read the first few and feel they would make nice bedtime stories for children. Remember though, children's stories used to contain beatings and such. These do as well. It's a nice contrast to the way authors write today, but parents may want to pre-read before snuggling up and reading out loud.

Never had a change to read this after cancelling prime. Hence the average rating
Different is one word to describe this book. It's stories you never hear about but might if you were born in Europe maybe. It has that old world kind of flavor. Strange is another word that comes up to mind also. If you like the old world style of story telling then this book might be for your reading enjoyment.

All the tales can be found elsewhere; such as the multi-colored fairy books of Andrew Lang. The prose isn't superior. I hope the illustrations (which we kindle folks can't see.) make up for it all. But I doubt it.
